Use of plastic bags, styrofoam to be regulated in Kalibo

KALIBO, Aklan – The use of plastic bags and Styrofoam packages will be regulated for the upcoming Ati-Atihan Festival this year.

Kalibo councilor Cynthia Dela Cruz, chairman of the committee on environment and health, said this after the Sanguniang Bayan approved an ordinance providing new rules and regulations for the use of plastic bags and Styrofoam in this town.

Dela Cruz said the legislation encourages consumers to bring their respective reusable plastic bags when shopping or buying produce at the market. Local government controlled markets such as the Kalibo Shopping Center and Public Market, among others are also discouraged to distribute plastic bags regardless of thickness.

A P5 fixed price is allowed for consumers requesting for a piece of reusable plastic bag at the public market.

“Plastic Bags used as primary packaging material for wrapping unpacked fresh foods and cooked foods at supermarkets, wet and dry markets, restaurants, canteens, and the like shall not be included under the scheme as the usage of such plastic bag is justified on the grounds of public hygiene,”dela Cruz noted./PN
