BACOLOD City — Two men were killed in separate shooting incidents in Negros Occidental on August 23, with the attacks occurring within a few hours of each other in the towns of Calatrava and Manapla.
In Calatrava, a 50-year-old man identified by police as alias “Jundy,” married and a resident of Barangay Lalong, was shot dead while reportedly on his way to Barangay Bago to attend market day.
Initial police investigation showed that the victim was traveling at around 9:45 a.m. when three unidentified men allegedly approached and shot him several times.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Responding personnel recovered his body from the roadside and brought it to the Calatrava Municipal Hospital for medico-legal examination.
About two hours later, another shooting was reported in Barangay I-A, Manapla.
The victim, identified by police as alias “Mau,” 57, was reportedly driving home when an unidentified gunman opened fire near the back portion of a convenience store.
According to police, the gunman was wearing pants, a black jacket and bonnet and used an unknown-caliber firearm.
Despite suffering gunshot wounds to the neck and head, the victim managed to accelerate and maneuver his vehicle for about 30 meters before turning right and eventually stopping in the middle of the road.
The Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office brought him to Dr. Ramon B. Gustilo Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Police recovered five fired cartridge cases and a deformed fired bullet of undetermined caliber at the scene.
The two incidents are being investigated separately, and police have yet to establish any connection between the attacks.
Authorities have not disclosed possible motives in either shooting, while efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects remain ongoing./PN
