
BACOLOD City took home the championship in the boys basketball event of the Batang Pinoy 2019 Visayas Qualifier leg after a 73-70 win over Cebu Province on Friday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
John Ordas led the way with 19 points, Nathan Jundana added 18 markers, while Mike Estelloso contributed 14 markers for the Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts-backed squad.
Trailing in the first three quarters of the game against the Cebuanos, Bacolod City made its run in the fourth quarter behind the hot shooting of Estilloso and Jundana to tie the count at 70-all.
Ordas broke the deadlock for the Bacolod City with a baseline jumper with under a minute left. Thomas Pillado, who took over from the cramped up Ordas, sealed the come-from-behind win.
“It was a hard earned win for us. We were down for most part of the game good thing our players never gave up,” said Bacolod City head coach Dexter Dy. “Good thing also John, Nathan and Mike stepped up in the fourth.”
Also part of the Bacolod City team were Heinzy Gabriel Demisana, Adrielle Binguan, John Ray Castiller, Marvin delos Santos, Dylan Despi, Josh Dignadice, CJ Juguan, and Rafael Ledesma.
In lawn tennis, the Iloilo City pair of Althea Rose Martirez and Ma. Petria Abigail Aguirre notched their second gold medal after defeating the Cebu City, 4-6, 7-6, 10-7, in the finals. Nikhel Nowlakha and Jeff Jimenea settled for silver in boys event.
Meanwhile, Sagay City took the championship in the boys U-15 futsal event after defeating Pontevedra, 7-6, in a tightly-contested gold medal match at the Western Visayas State University Gym.
San Carlos City, meanwhile, bagged the gold medal in girls U-15 futsal after a 2-1 victory over Cebu Province, while Negros Occidental emerged as the winner in boys U-13./PN
