ILOILO – The police provincial office (IPPO) here ticketed a total of 4,082 traffic violators from Aug. 10 to Oct. 3 under its “Oplan Hilway Dalan.”
IPPO director Colonel Roland Vilela noted the prevalence of traffic accidents in the province which killed 72 people since January this year.
Vilela said violators were issued tickets and were fined, as prescribed by Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.
The IPPO recorded around 2,210 traffic accidents since January, 63-percent higher than figures in the same period last year.
Vilela instructed chiefs of police to deter traffic incidents by manning the highways.
“I directed the chiefs of police to remove those unregistered vehicles plying the streets, drivers without licenses, and vehicles that are no longer road safety,” Vilela said.
Under “Oplan Hilway Dalan,” provincial cops conduct checkpoints and intensify the enforcement of ordinances.
Most of the violations recorded were driving without the use of helmets or seatbelts, driving without licenses and drivers who fail to carry and present their official registration or certificate of registration.
A week after Vilela assumed office on Sept. 1, he posed a 24-hour challenge to his chiefs of police to ticket at least 10 traffic violators per police station. The exercise was able to issue citations to 497 traffic violators.
“One of my priority thrusts is relentless law enforcement so we will continue our operations daily,” said Vilela.(With a report from PNA/PN)
