ITALY – A new high tide of 154cm (5ft) has hit the inundated Venice recently, giving residents no respite from a crisis, costing the country millions of euros.
The world-famous St. Mark’s Square has been closed and schools were shut for a third day.
The canal city’s famous waterbuses – the vaporetti – were not running.
“With the salt water everything becomes more difficult for us,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said on Friday.
The 187cm peak on Tuesday was the highest level in over 50 years with more than 80 percent of the city being flooded.
The government declared a state of emergency in the world heritage site.(BBC)
