Good psychological health in the time of ‘corona’

(Statement from the Psychology faculty members of the University of the Philippines Visayas on COVID-19)

TH E Psychology faculty of the University of the Philippines Visayas acknowledges the concerns that the country is facing in relation to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019).

We recognize that this is a problem of a global scale. As such, many aspects regarding this concern are beyond our control. This may cause you to experience anxiety, panic, and other forms of psychological distress.

Nevertheless, there are things that we can do to help prevent the spread of the disease and maintain good psychological health. In this regard, we urge the UPV community to observe the following pointers during these difficult times:

Remain calm

When you start feeling alarmed and panicky, breathe.

When breathing to relax, take a deep breath through the nose, hold it for a number of seconds, then breathe out through the mouth. Breathing should be slow. While doing this, think of a familiar and relaxing image.

Stay healthy

Follow the guidelines on how to prevent the spread of the disease. Wash your hands thoroughly and avoid crowded places. Practice social distancing.

Be responsible with information and social media

While we recognize social media as an important platform to learn about the disease, most of the information on social media may cause unnecessary psychological distress. Practice social media distancing.

In the same manner, be mindful of the information that you share on social media. Do not share information that may cause panic and unnecessary psychological distress.

Seek out information and updates from trusted and legitimate sources.

Maintain social support

Practicing social distancing does not mean isolating yourself. Know the people whom you can trust and develop a system of checking-in with each other.

Contact the UPV HSU or the UPV OSA

Should you experience physical symptoms, do not hesitate to contact the UPV Health Services Unit (033) 315-8301.

If you feel that you need professional help to deal with psychological distress, get in touch with your Guidance Services Specialists at the Office of Student Affairs (033) 513-7019.

While these times may be hard, know that there is available support. Let us all remain calm as we go through this difficult period and let us all work together to maintain a safe and healthy university./PN
