“Manyaks”, disente, hypocrites and the usual suspects

IT SEEMS the notion that the University of the Philippines (UP) is the bastion of higher learning producing graduates or students that are highly educated, idealistic and independent thinkers capable of discerning right from wrong has become a thing of the distant past.

The current crop of eskolar ng bayan is no different from your Frappuccino-infused trendy social-climbing so-called millennials and “devotees to the cult of the yellow ribbon”, just “sheep” who blindly follow the “trendy advocacy” espoused by their ageing professors who still fancy themselves as quaint activists reliving their failed 1st Quarter Storm dreams, nevermind if that is obsolete and proven a failure or no longer relevant after the bogeyman had been dead more than 30 years ago and probably turning to bones in his grave.

It’s been 39 years after it was lifted and the eskolar ng bayan are still shouting “no to martial law”, and 31 years after Ferdinand Marcos died they’re still screaming no to Marcos. Do yourselves a favor and wake up from your almost 40 years of stupor.

But we’re not talking about that, at least not yet. We’ll just be “trendy” and talk about the latest faux pas of the eskolar ng bayan.

A few weeks back we had le affair UPLB:

It seems that the folks at the Defend UPLB (University of the Philippines Los Baños) got caught with their knickers down and the sight wasn’t pretty, one of their members posted a supposedly death threat against him but it turns out that the mobile number used by what they claim was a “fake account” turns out to be the same number that Defend UPLB has on their FB account as their hotline number.

The funny thing there is that this person who claimed he received this “death threat” because of his “junk terror bill” stand turned out to be the owner of the mobile phone and number that sent the “death threat”.

Of course, after shooting themselves in the foot, Defend UPLB has been eerily silent.

And then we have this recent exhibitionistic/voyeuristic scandal from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) that would make the original social media disente exhibitionistic king Jim Paredes blush in shame.

Excerpts from the July 3, 2020 issue of Panay News:

‘MANYAKS OF UPV’

Twitter account exposes campus ‘sex predators’

A Twitter account alleging predatory sexual behavior of some male students and fraternity members at the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) campus in Miag-ao, Iloilo has prompted the school to launch an investigation.

The Twitter account “Manyaks of UPV” posted what have now become viral screenshots of a group chat whose members appeared to have shared nude photos of young women, allegedly including their exes and friends, and made sexually objectifying comments.

These triggered emotional submissions from mostly female UPV students and alumni claiming they were harassed or even raped, and they dropped names.

A “social media fiasco” was how the Office of the Chancellor of UPV described the current issue but it acknowledged the seriousness of the matter.

The viral Twitter screenshots of group chat conversations were supposedly among some members of the UP Visayas Scintilla Jvris. Following the leak, the fraternity called the messages “malicious” and claimed it was taking action.

SAMASA UPV, a political organization, said the Twitter account gained traction for releasing conversations that “contained messages on sexual harassment, slut shaming, objectification, and homophobia.”

Compared to this latest stunt from the eskolar ng bayan, Jim Paredes’ limp purple performance on social media would seem very inadequate indeed (pun intended).

To think that these eskolar ng bayan consider themselves belonging to the disente society who stand with ABS-CBN, junk the Anti-Terrorism Bill and of course support the blogger Maria Ressa recently convicted of cyber libel are just nothing but your usual perverts who get off demeaning women.

These assholes are your typical entitled hypocrites; I would not be surprised if they would resort to using the “victim card” when brought to court.

UP has lost its credibility as an esteemed institution for higher learning; it has become a joke that’s not even funny, a breeding ground for pseudo communists. Perhaps it’s time that we look at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as the country’s premier institute of higher learning./PN
