ILOILO City – The city government cited several barangays with laudable achievements in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
“Our barangay officials are among the new heroes who rose to fight the pandemic,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas during yesterday’s awarding ceremony of “Bato, Iloilo, Bato Barangay Ko!”
This project, according to Treñas, was conceptualized to highlight the city’s continuing recovery and the Ilonggos’ resilience despite the ongoing global health crisis.
It likewise encourages barangays leaders to explore and implement programs that best protect their residents from the pandemic, the mayor added.
The winners were the following:
* Most Effective Barangay Info Drive Against COVID-19 – Libertad, Punong, San Rafael, Airport, Javellana, Zamora-Melliza, Magsaysay, Luna, Lopez Jaena Norte, Tap-oc, Calumpang, and Sto. Niño Norte
* Most Active Barangay Council Against COVID-19 – Libertad, Punong, San Rafael, Airport, Javellana, Buntatala, Zamora-Melliza, Veterans Village, Rizal, Lopez Jaena Norte, Kasing-kasing, Calumpang, and Sto. Niño Norte
* Most Active Barangay Sangguniang Kabataain Against COVID-19 – Lapuz Sur, Bo. Obrero, Punong, Navais, San Rafael, Airport, Bitoon, Balantang, Zamora-Melliza, Nabitasan, Calumpang, South Baluarte, and Sto. Niño Norte
* Most Active Barangay Social Media Campaign Against COVID-19 – Punong, Airport, San Rafael, Javellana, Zamora-Melleza, Veterans Village, Lopez Jaena Norte, Luna, Calumpang, and Sto. Niño Norte Each winning barangay received P10,000 cash.
Treñas said the project was facilitated by his daughter, Raisa, to inspire barangays to look for ways and means to effectively contain the spread of the viral illness.
He stressed that it is imperative to motivate barangays by providing them with incentives, which can also serve as assistance in maximizing their response.
Earlier, the mayor challenged barangays in the city’s seven districts to keep their areas free of COVID-19 for the entire month of December and get a reward of P50,000 in return.
The city government will team up with the Department of Health to verify if a barangay tallied zero COVID-19 cases by the end of December before it could claim the incentive./PN
