ILOILO City – Antique and Guimaras have the least number of active coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases among the provinces and highly urbanized cities in Western Visayas, data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed.
As of Jan. 31, Antique had six COVID-19 cases while Guimaras had eight.
The six active cases of Antique were the following:
* 16-year-old male, home quarantine
* 50-year-old male, facility quarantine
* 65 year-old female, home quarantine
* 52-year-old female, facility quarantine
* 79 year-old, female, hospitalized
* 67 year old, female, hospitalized
Meanwhile, the number of Antique’s confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 106 since recording started in March last year, with 99 having recovered, and just one casualty.
In Guimaras, on the other hand, the eight active cases were in the towns of Buenavista (six), Nueva Valencia (one) and Jordan (one).
The number of the island province’s COVID-19 cases reported since last year has now reached 264, with four deaths and 252 that recovered.
Here’s the number of active cases in other key areas of Region 6:
* Capiz – 18
* Aklan – 103
* Bacolod City – 151
* Negros Occidental – 184
* Iloilo City – 247
* Iloilo province – 426
On the other hand, here are their cumulative cases and death toll:
* Negros Occidental – 6,615 cases with 180 deaths
* Bacolod City – 5,748 cases with 184 deaths
* Iloilo City – 5,004 cases with 155 deaths
* Iloilo province – 3,596 cases with 104 deaths
* Capiz – 1,248 cases with 52 deaths
* Aklan – 610 with 18 deaths
As of Jan. 31, Region 6 had a total of 23,189 COVID-19 cases since March last year when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic (1,152 active cases, 21,333 recovered and 698 dead).
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough.
Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell.
Most people (about 80 percent) recover from the disease without needing special treatment, according to the WHO.
Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to develop serious illness.
Dr. Jane Juanico, head of DOH-6’s Infectious Disease Section, again reminded Western Visayans to observe public safety protocols to stop the disease from spreading – wear facemask and face shield, physical distancing and proper washing of hands.
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.
These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth./PN
