MANILA – Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar has been appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the new chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Malacañang announced on Wednesday.
According to Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Duterte has already signed Eleazar’s appointment papers based on the recommendation of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
“Gen. Eleazar’s track record of professionalism, dedication, and integrity as a policeman speaks for itself,” Roque said in a statement sent to Panay News.
The Palace is also confident that Eleazar will continue the reform initiatives of his predecessors and lead the PNP to greater heights.
“Eleazar was recommended to be the next chief [of] PNP based on seniority, merit, service reputation, and competence to lead the police force,” DILG secretary Eduardo Año said in a separate statement.
Eleazar is the sixth PNP chief appointed by the President since he assumed the presidency. He is the successor of Gen. Debold Sinas who will retire on May 8.
He was a former chief of the National Capital Region Police Office and head of the government’s task force against coronavirus disease 2019 quarantine violators. Currently, he is the PNP’s deputy chief for operations.
Just like Sinas, Eleazar belongs to the Philippine Military Academy Hinirang Class of 1987./PN
