MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday challenged Filipinos to transform remembrance of the nation’s heroes into concrete acts of service, saying patriotism must be demonstrated through everyday contributions to building a stronger country.
In his National Heroes’ Day message, Marcos said honoring those who fought for the country should extend beyond commemorations, with Filipinos carrying forward their courage, sacrifice and sense of responsibility.
He said the freedom and dignity enjoyed by Filipinos today were made possible by generations who fought for the nation and laid the foundations of the republic.
Marcos urged citizens to prove themselves worthy of that inheritance by practicing patriotism, fulfilling their responsibilities and contributing to the country’s progress.
The President stressed that heroism is not confined to historical figures, saying the same spirit continues to live among Filipinos who dedicate themselves to serving others and their communities.
He cited soldiers and first responders who risk their lives in the line of duty, as well as teachers and healthcare workers whose service directly affects the lives of Filipinos.
Marcos also recognized farmers, fisherfolk and overseas Filipino workers whose labor sustains families, communities and the broader economy.
Ordinary citizens who help their neighbors, protect vulnerable people and earn an honest living for the good of their families and communities likewise embody modern-day heroism, he said.
The President called on Filipinos to help build a nation that future generations can inherit with pride, stressing that the sacrifices of past heroes carry with them a responsibility for citizens today.
Marcos said the government’s vision of a “Bagong Pilipinas” should remain rooted in honoring those who served the country in the past while recognizing the heroes of the present and those who will emerge in generations to come.
He ended his message by paying tribute to the nation’s heroes and the Filipino people.
National Heroes’ Day is observed every last Monday of August. Malacañang declared August 31 a regular holiday this year in observance of the occasion./PN
