ILOILO – A man suffering from nervous breakdown was shot on Monday night in Barangay Bagumbayan, Santa Barbara town for trying to kill the municipal police chief.
The 41-year-old Joel Simpao died while being treated for a gunshot wound at the Western Visayas Sanitarium.
Simpao, armed with a 22-inch bolo and an 11-inch knife, became unruly around 8:30 p.m. His family called the police for assistance.
Santa Barbara police chief, Police Major Raymund Celoso, initially sent his men but Simpao refused to surrender.
Celoso, along with members of the Special Weapons and Tactics, eventually came over but Simpao became all the more aggressive.
“We tried to talk to him peacefully. We asked him what he wanted but he was not responding. Pero kon family nya gasabat sia…and we had a talk with his family para ma-convince nila nga mag-surrender. Pero indi gid sia hasta nga ginapahalin nya iya pamilya. Nangayo sia sang ulihi sang biscuit kag tubig pero dapat ang naka-seal,” Celuso told Panay News.
After eating, Simpao tried to hack Celoso twice.
Police Master Sergeant Richard Jamoyot of SWAT fired at Simpao.
“Sang natumba na (Simpao), gin dali-dali ko kadtoan to check his condition. Wala ko kabalo nga ara pa sa iya kamot ang kutsilyo and he tried to attack me again, but we were able to subdue him. Nabudlayan pa kami pahigda sa iya sa stretcher kay nagawaras,” Celoso added.
Celoso said they had no plan to kill or shoot the man.
