ILOILO City – Majority of those who died of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in this southern city were unvaccinated against the viral disease.
Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 20 this year, the city listed a total of 278 pandemic fatalities, data from the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) of the City Health Office (CHO) showed.
Of the total deaths this year, a92 percent or 256 were unvaccinated; eight were fully vaccinated while 14 had their first dose of an anti-COVID-19 shot.
Data also showed that 88 of the COVID deaths were asymptomatic, 83 experienced influenza-like illnesses and 107 had severe acute respiratory infection (SARI).
Also, 107 of these 278 deaths were directly attributed to COVID-19, 106 were indirect while 55 were for verification.
COVID deaths were also 2.64 percent of the total confirmed cases recorded between Jan. 1 to Aug. 28.
Fifteen of these deaths were recorded in January, seven each in February and March, nine in April, 45 in May, 94 in June, 70 in July and 31 in August (1 to 28).
The CESU also noted that the most affected age group in terms of COVID cases was 21 to 30 years old.
Thirteen barangays here, meanwhile, have clustering of COVID-19 cases (two or more cases for two consecutive weeks).
Since the pandemic started last year, Iloilo City logged 16,198 confirmed coronavirus cases, of which 15,620 were local cases.
Around 86.65 percent or 14,391 of the cumulative cases have already recovered while 430 died./PN
