BACOLOD City – The Northern Negros Natural Park (NNNP) temporarily suspended major trekking activities due to insurgency.
The suspension covers activities at the Tinagong Dagat/Danao, Sulfutara and Pandong Bato, according to Engineer Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya, NNNP Protected Area superintendent.
Meanwhile, minor trekking in Mayana Peak in San Carlos City; Malatan-og and Kawa Waterfalls in Don Salvador Benedicto; and Malisbog, Dumalabdab and Pulang Tubig Waterfalls in Silay City, will continue.
Gun battles between government forces and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were recently recorded in areas covered by the NNNP.
In August, the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion clashed against rebels in Barangay Kapitan Ramon, Silay City. A soldier and two rebels died.
In April, the NPA torched heavy equipment in Barangay Consing, E.B. Magalona. The rebels allegedly kidnapped and murdered a village watchman./PN
