MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings wasted an early lead before rallying past Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 104-93, in the 2021-2022 PBA Governors’ Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After seeing their 11-point lead turned to a 83-89 deficit, the Kings responded with a three-point play from Justin Brownlee and a triple by Negrense Jeffrei Chan to tie the score at 89-all.
The Kings continued its run with conversions from Brownlee, Earl Scottie Thompson and Christian Standhardinger to pull away at 104-91 after another trey by Chan.
Brownlee finished the match with 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Standhardinger added 20 markers as the Kings secured a quarterfinals seat with its 6-5 slate.
Chan converted four triples to finish with season-high 15 points. Thompson had double-double 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Japeth Aguilar chipped in 10 markers for the Kings.
Henry Walker ended with 34 points, while rookie Andrei Caracut and Beau Belga added 12 markers apiece as the Painters finished their campaign at 10th place with 3-8 slate.
In the first game, Michael Harris haunted his former team Alaska Aces as he leads Magnolia Pambansang Manok Hotshots to a 118-91 triumph, the latter’s ninth win in 10 matches.
Harris, a former PBA Best Import winner during his stint with the Aces, tallied double-double 38 points and 10 rebounds as the Hotshots secured the top seed heading into the quarterfinals.
Harris was a man on a mission as he dropped 16 points in the first quarter before adding four more in the second period as the Hotshots were on top, 61-49, at the half.
The 38-year-old import continued his rampage in the third quarter where he poured 18 points as Magnolia pulled away for good to build its largest lead at 31 points.
