MANILA – Iloilo Kisela Knights scored back-to-back victories while Negros Island Region Kingsmen remains ahead in the 2023 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) 1st Conference over the weekend.
The Kisela Knights first hacked out a 13-8 victory over Isabela Knights of Alexander before pulling off a 15.5-5.5 romp of Cagayan Kings to remain at fourth place in Southern Division with 11-6 slate.
The Kisela Knights pulled off a 4-3 escape over Isabela in the blitz event with Mark Jossel Mariano (Board 1), Jovelyn Sepanton (Board 3), Horizon Villanueva (Board 5) and Rolly Parondo Jr. (Board 7) scoring full points each.
The Ilonggos got their much needed separation from Isabela in the rapid event, 9-5, with Mariano, Sepanton, Fritz Bryan Porras (Board 6) and Parondo completing the full two points and Lloyd Lanciola splitting point at the second board.
The Kisela Knights were forced to a 3.5-3.5 draw in blitz by Cagayan before bouncing back with a 12-2 victory in rapid game behind two points by Mariano, Lanciola, Sepanton, Villanueva, Porras and Parondo.
The Kingsmen, on the other hand, continued to stay on top in the Southern Division standings with a 16-1 slate after a 20-1 rout of Cavite Spartans and a 13-8 triumph over Isabela.
The Negrenses scored a 6-1 victory over the Spartans in the blitz event with full points each from David Elorta (Board 1), Joel Pimentel (Board 2), Bernadette Galas (Board 3), Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Board 4), Ellan Asuela (Board 5) and Jerich Cajeras (Board 7).
The Kingsmen continued their dominance of the Cavitenos in the rapid event, 14-0, as Elorta, Pimentel, Galas, Antonio, Asuela, Edsel Montoya (Board 6) and Cajeras beating their foes.
The Kingsmen prevailed over Isabela in the blitz event, 5-2, with Elorta (Board 1), Antonio (Board 2), Galas (Board 3) and Genesis Borromeo (Board 7) getting full points and Edmundo Gatus (Board 4) and Pimentel (Board 5) splitting.
The Negrenses, however, barely escaped Isabela in the rapid game, 8-6, with Elorta, Pimentel and Xavier Verdun (Board 6) finishing with two full points and Antonio and Gatus settling for draw./PN
