AKLAN – Pre-pandemic direct flights from mainland China to the Kalibo International Airport will resume this April after three years of suspension.
Beginning April 26, Chinese carrier Okay Airways will begin flying a new route, Kalibo-Changsha Huanghua, operating thrice weekly (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday).
AirAsia Philippines is also expected to resume direct flights between Kalibo and mainland China by June as China eases some of its coronavirus 2019 pandemic travel restrictions.
The Chinese market was one of the largest inbound markets for Boracay Island before the coronavirus pandemic struck in 2020. The island is counting on the return of Chinese visitors to keep its tourism industry recovery going.
Philippine Airlines will also offer daily non-stop flights from Incheon, South Korea to Kalibo airport beginning April 20.
Currently, airlines Air Seoul, Tway Air and Tiger Airways have direct services from South Korea (Incheon) to the Kalibo International Airport.
Last year, the Kalibo International Airport handled 640 international flights and 3,856 domestic flights.
Meanwhile, Kalibo airport manager Engr. John William Fuerte reports smooth operations during the Holy Week.
Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa was activated at Kalibo airport from April 2 to 10 in anticipation of heavy passenger traffic.
Passenger numbers are also expected to rise with the summer holidays./PN
