BACOLOD City – This year, 221 barangay health workers (BHWs) in this city will have an increased monthly allowance.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved on third and final reading the proposed measure amending Section 1 of City Ordinance No. 956, Series of 2021, to increase the monthly allowance of BHWs from P5,500 to P7,000.
Councilor Claudio Jesus Puentevella, SP’s health committee chairperson, said the current stipend for BHWs is insufficient to meet the demand for prices of basic commodities.
“The salary increase is one way of expressing the city government’s appreciation to these frontliners who have tirelessly worked to ensure that every Bacolodnon is provided with proper health care,” he added.
Puentevella urged barangay councils to allocate funds so that they can also increase the allowance of BHWs under the barangay payroll.
The SP member disclosed that one BHW deals with around 200 to 300 households. However, the Department of Health recommends one BHW per 20 households only./PN
