ILOILO City – A former inmate was fatally shot in a drive-by attack while parking his bicycle on Guanco Street in Barangay Bonifacio, Arevalo district early morning yesterday.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. and the victim, Renante Sajonia, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital at 8:28 a.m.

Police Captain Benjie Dicen, head of the Arevalo police station, said Sajonia, who was in his 40s and a resident of Barangay Sta. Cruz, Arevalo, was collecting vegetables when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on him.

Sajonia succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

This was not the first time Sajonia had been targeted in such a manner, police said.

Having previously been convicted of two homicides, Sajonia had served a sentence at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, for a separate offense.

The police are still investigating the motive for the killing and the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown.

Eyewitnesses, including barangay watchman Filberto Gison, saw the attackers flee immediately after shooting Sajonia.

The police’s Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered at least six spent bullet shells in the crime scene.

The police is urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting./PN
