ILOILO — A groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, May 2, marked the beginning of construction for an P80-million multi-purpose sports facility at the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) in Barotac Nuevo town in the 4th District.

This new complex, facilitated by Uswag Ilonggo party-list’s Cong. James “Jojo” Ang Jr. who led the groundbreaking, aims to bolster local sports and provide a state-of-the-art training venue for athletes in the 4th District.

The facility will include an Olympic-grade oval for track and field, a grandstand for various outdoor events, a top-tier basketball court suitable for national and international competitions, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool available to the public.

ISUFST in Barotac Nuevo was chosen as site of the multi-purpose sports facility to make it easily accessible from various municipalities of the 4th District, benefiting everyone in the area.

Cong. Ang expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its significance for local residents and its role in fostering athletic talent.

“This facility is positioned at ISUFST to serve as the sports hub of the 4th District. It is not just for the people of Barotac Nuevo but for all residents of the district, said  Ang.

He further elaborated on the strategic importance of investing in such infrastructures.

“We want to further recognize and develop the skills and talents of the Ilonggos in sports. This is our way of supporting our youth and athletes, saving them the need to travel far for training as we bring the training grounds closer to them,” Ang said.

The congressman also mentioned the broader impacts of the sports complex.

“This will also boost our tourism as this facility will double as a tourism or events venue. We can now hold big events and concerts not just in Iloilo City but even outside of it. Opportunities are equal for everyone,” Ang stated.

The project is part of a broader initiative led by Congressman Ang aiming to establish at least one such facility in each district of the province of Iloilo.

Also present at the groundbreaking were Cong. Ferjenel Biron of the 4th District; Mayor Bryant Paul Biron of  Barotac Nuevo; Dr. Nordy Siason, ISUFST president; officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ 2nd Engineering District; and faculty and staff of ISUFST./PN
