KALIBO, Aklan – Dengue monitoring in the province of Aklan recorded 518 cases from January 1 to June 1 this year.
The towns of Batan, Kalibo, Ibajay, Malay, and Nabas reported the most number of infections, according to Department of Health (DOH).
Ten new cases were also tallied for the period May 26 to June 1 based on morbidity week report of DOH Region 6’s Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit as of June 4.
The dengue virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, and a person can be infected with dengue multiple times.
Dengue mosquitoes are day-biting and thrive and reproduce in clean, stagnant water.
The region, meanwhile, recorded 3,283 dengue cases from January 1 to June 1, up by 21 percent from 2,716 cases logged in the same period in 2023.
Also, eight dengue-related deaths have been confirmed in the region.
The age group with the most cases is between one to 10 years old, accounting for 41 percent.
Iloilo Province logged the most number of dengue cases with 1,079 followed by Aklan, Negros Occidental with 477, Capiz with 437, Antique with 251, Iloilo City with 223, Guimaras with 176, and Bacolod City with 152 cases.
The DOH continues to remind the public to observe 5S strategy against dengue: search and destroy breeding sites; self-protection from mosquito bites; seek early medical consultation; support fogging in areas with clustering of cases; and sustain hydration./PN
