ANTIQUE – A fisherman from San Jose de Buenavista town safely returned home after being adrift at sea for six days.

Robert Benitin, a resident of the town’s Barangay San Fernando, arrived ashore at around 7 a.m. yesterday, October 25. Using only a paddle, he navigated his way back, a journey that took him five hours to complete.

Benitin expressed his immense relief and gratitude to be safely reunited with his family despite the hardships he endured at sea.

He had initially set out from home on October 19 with his fishing group. However, while his companions managed to return, he was left stranded at sea when one of his boat’s engines malfunctioned after just three days. Nevertheless, he decided to continue fishing, hoping the issue would resolve. On the fourth day, when he planned to return, he said the engine failed completely, leaving him adrift.

Fortunately, Benitin had packed rice and other groceries, which sustained him while he waited for rescue.

During his time at sea, Antique Province was struck by strong winds and rain brought by Tropical Storm Kristine, adding to the peril of his situation.

His wife, Orlanny Perocho, shared her joy and relief upon his return, as the family had begun to fear the worst after he had been missing for several days./PN
