ILOILO – A barangay tanod is now the subject of a police manhunt after fatally shooting a 31-year-old water delivery worker in broad daylight in Barangay Bolilao, Dumangas town yesterday.
The victim identified as Junel Caspillo Diel, a resident of People’s Village, Barangay PD Monfort North, was reportedly delivering water around 10 a.m. when he was confronted and allegedly shot by suspect Cirelo Defiño Sobrevega.
According to Police Master Sergeant John Mark Tuazon of the Dumangas Municipal Police Station, the shooting was rooted in a previous altercation that occurred during the fiesta celebration in Bolilao a day earlier.
A commotion reportedly broke out at the residence of Diel’s live-in partner. Sobrevega, on duty as a tanod, attempted to intervene but was allegedly punched by Diel.
Following the incident, Diel was arrested and detained but was released on Monday, April 21.
Just a day later, the victim returned to Bolilao as part of his usual water delivery route. Upon seeing Sobrevega by the roadside, Diel approached him and was heard by witnesses apologizing for the punch.
However, in a sudden turn of events, Sobrevega allegedly drew a firearm and shot Diel in the chest. The victim ran toward a nearby market stall in an attempt to escape, but the tanod reportedly chased him down and fired two more shots before fleeing the scene.
Diel was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
As of this writing, police have yet to locate Sobrevega. Authorities appeal to the public for any information that could aid in the arrest of the suspect./PN
