ANTIQUE – Authorities urged motorcyclists anew to wear proper safety gear following the death of a graduating Criminology student who figured in a fatal road crash yesterday morning in Barangay 3, San Jose de Buenavista town here.
Alias “Norman,” 23, and a resident of Barangay Guisijan, Laua-an town, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital after his motorcycle crashed into a concrete wall around 3 a.m.
Initial investigation by the San Jose de Buenavista Municipal Police Station revealed that Norman had just come from a party in Barangay Madrangca and was heading back to his boardinghouse. However, while navigating a sharp curve in Barangay 3, he reportedly lost control of his motorcycle, veered to the left, and crashed into a residential wall.
Due to the strong impact, he was thrown off his motorcycle, sustaining severe injuries that ultimately led to his death.
Police have ruled out foul play and classified the incident as a case of self-accident due to loss of control.
At the time of the crash, Norman was only wearing a nutshell helmet — a type of helmet that offers minimal protection compared to standard full-face or modular helmets. This may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
Police continue to remind the public, especially motorcycle riders, to observe road safety regulations, including wearing Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-approved helmets and exercising caution when negotiating sharp turns, especially during nighttime travel.
Norman was set to graduate from his Bachelor of Science in Criminology course this year, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for his family./PN
