ILOILO City – This city’s Dinagyang Festival is set to bring Ilonggo heritage to a global audience this June. Two of its top-performing tribes take center stage in major cultural showcases in Japan and the nation’s capital.
Grand champion Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School will headline the Philippines’ cultural presentation at the Osaka Expo 2025 from June 7 to 12.
Meanwhile, first runner-up Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School will represent the city at the Parada ng Kalayaan in Manila on June 12, as part of the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
The twin engagements underscore Dinagyang’s growing stature as a world-class cultural brand and Iloilo’s reputation as a center of excellence in performance, creativity, and tradition.
Dinagyang at Osaka Expo: A Call for Sustainability
Tribu Paghidaet’s performance in Japan — alongside Cebu’s Sinulog Festival contingent— will feature Hinabol nga Kabuhi (Weaving Life), a dance drama inspired by the four elements of nature and their significance in both pre-colonial belief systems and contemporary calls for environmental stewardship.
“Today’s Dinagyang warriors are no longer just performers—they are stewards of creation,” said artistic director Eric Divinagracia, emphasizing the fusion of tradition and advocacy in the group’s message.
The Iloilo contingent, consisting of 15 dancers and eight drummers, will perform at various venues inside the Osaka Expo grounds, including the National Hall and the East Pop-up Stage. Despite the smaller ensemble compared to typical Dinagyang contingents, creative director Elvert Bañares assured that the group is ready to deliver a compelling, world-class performance.
Independence Day Parade: Iloilo in Full Force
While Tribu Paghidaet prepares to wow international audiences, Tribu Pan-ay is gearing up to lead the cultural charge in Manila.
With over 300 performers, the group will participate in the first-ever national street dance competition during the Parada ng Kalayaan, themed “Ang Pagtuo, Kahilwayan” (Faith is Freedom).
“This is a fresh and powerful take on Dinagyang, designed specifically for the national stage,” said choreographer Tata Carado.
The routine will showcase the tribe’s distinct identity while upholding the spiritual and cultural essence of Iloilo’s signature festival.
Full Support from Local Leaders
The Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI), led by executive director Joyce Anne Clavecillas, confirmed support from Mayor Jerry Treñas for both delegations.
“These are acts of cultural diplomacy. They amplify Iloilo’s presence on the national and international stage,” Clavecillas said.
The Province of Iloilo will also take part in the Manila float parade via the Tultugan Festival of Maasin town, recent champion in Dinagyang’s Sinadya sa Kabanwahan category. Last year, Sta. Barbara’s Kahilwayan Festival topped the competition, raising the bar for this year’s entries.
Next Stop: New Zealand
Following the June showcases, Dinagyang eyes another international engagement in November — this time in New Zealand — further expanding the global footprint of Iloilo’s cultural pride.
With performances beyond Philippine shores, Dinagyang reaffirms its status not only as a celebration of faith and festivity but as a cultural ambassador of the Ilonggos./PN
