ILOILO – The provincial government is taking a bold stand against plastic pollution this June as it launches a province-wide campaign anchored on the theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution” in celebration of Environment Month 2025.
The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO) has rolled out a line-up of activities designed to tackle the escalating plastic garbage problem and instill sustainable habits among communities across the province.
Central to this initiative is the reduction of single-use plastics, particularly in public markets, as part of Iloilo’s broader environmental protection agenda.
“The provincial government is prioritizing the reduction of single-use plastics, especially in public markets, as a pivotal goal of its comprehensive environmental protection agenda,” said Mitzi Peñaflorida, senior environmental management specialist at PGENRO.
The month-long celebration also includes volunteer-driven programs aimed at improving public school environments and promoting a circular economy through waste repurposing and upcycling.
Here is the schedule of key activities:
* June 2 – Kick-off of Environment Month celebration with the province-wide Limpyo Iloilo and Kada Lunes nga Lihok kontra Lamok (Executive Order No. 29, s. 2025)
* June 5 – Tanum Iloilo Part I, a simultaneous tree-planting activity
* June 9–13 – Province-wide Brigada Eskwela to clean and improve schools
* June 20 – Provincial Solid Waste Management Board Meeting
* June 23 – Ceremonial turnover of campaign waste materials for upcycling
* June 28 – Tanum Iloilo Part II
PGENRO emphasized that Environment Month serves not only to spread awareness about plastic’s role in pollution and climate change but also to expose large-scale sources of plastic waste and mobilize collective environmental action.
The government hopes the initiative will not only promote environmental responsibility but also reinforce community health and foster a lasting culture of accountability.
