MANILA – Gregory Slaughter is making a basketball comeback as he joins Basilan Starhorse Viva Portmasters in the ongoing Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) season.
Viva Portmasters co-team owner Jackson Chua Jr. confirmed that they have reached a deal with a 7-foot Cebuano center to add depth to their shorthanded frontline.
“We’re excited to welcome Greg to the squad,” Chua said in an interview with Panay News. “His size, experience, and leadership will be a huge boost for our campaign this season.”
Chua admitted that they are eyeing to add the former Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings big man during the offseason, but only come to terms with Slaughter recently.
“Matagal na namin planong kunin si Greg, noong offseason pa dapat. His addition also signals Basilan’s serious intent to contend in the loaded MPBL field,” Chua further said.
Slaughter is joining fellow former PBA players Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, Jervy Cruz and Sherwin Concepcion, as well as Adrian Santos, Emman Calo, and Ilonggo Omar Larupay.
Slaughter has been away from competitive basketball since suiting up for Manila Stars in last year’s MPBL. He was supposed to play for Cebu Classic this season, but did not push through.
He began his basketball journey in the Visayas before he moved to Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in UAAP. He then joined the Gin Kings and NorthPort Batang Pier in the PBA.
Chua said Slaughter’s Basilan debut is being targeted on July 14 against Manila Batang Quiapo at the Orion Sports Center in Bataan./PN
