Bacolod public plaza, BCGC renovation to begin this month

BACOLOD City – The much-anticipated renovation of this city’s public plaza and the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) is set to commence this month.

The project, which was initially pursued under the administration of former mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, is being funded through a P300-million allocation from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA). The fund will cover the redevelopment of both the BCGC in Barangay Villamonte and the Bacolod public plaza in the downtown area.

Current Mayor Greg Gasataya confirmed that TIEZA is ready to proceed with the project this month following a meeting with agency representatives on July 11.

Gasataya said the city is now finalizing the schedule for the start of renovation works at both the BCGC and the heritage plaza. He emphasized the importance of starting the project promptly so Bacolodnons can soon enjoy revitalized and improved public spaces.

“Even if the renovation won’t be fully completed before the MassKara Festival, it’s important that we show progress — a fresh new face for Bacolodnons to enjoy,” Gasataya said.

Engr. Gregory Oller, a representative from TIEZA’s Architectural and Engineering Sector, confirmed that construction may begin this July, provided all required documents are submitted and approved on time.

Although full project completion is expected next year, priority will be given to essential components such as lighting and electrical systems. These are targeted for completion before the MassKara Festival in October to enhance both the ambiance and safety for festival-goers.

The project was originally slated to begin in February and finish by November, but was delayed due to final validation of suppliers and procurement processes.

Despite the delay, the city government and TIEZA remain committed to delivering these infrastructure improvements, which are expected to benefit both residents and visitors as Bacolod prepares for one of the country’s most vibrant festivals./PN
