Monthly free ‘mothers’ class’ promotes safe pregnancy

ILOILO City – To improve maternal health outcomes, the Iloilo City Government has launched a monthly “Mother’s Class” at the La Paz Maternity & Reproductive Health Center.

It will equip pregnant women with essential knowledge on safe pregnancy, breastfeeding, and family planning, said Mayor Raisa Treñas.

The class will be held every last Friday of the month as part of the city’s growing efforts to strengthen women’s health and wellness programs at the grassroots level.

“The topics covered will include safe pregnancy, family planning, and breastfeeding,” said Treñas.

The La Paz Maternity Clinic, under the Jaro I Health Center network, already offers free prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal care. With this added educational component, the city hopes to reinforce support systems for expectant mothers while reducing preventable health risks.

Mayor Treñas said the classes are open to all pregnant residents across Iloilo City’s seven districts, including La Paz, which is home to over 54,000 residents. The city’s total population exceeds 450,000.

Treñas underscored the importance of informed motherhood as part of her broader health and social services agenda.

Looking ahead, the city government plans to monitor participation and impact from the monthly classes, with the possibility of replicating the program in other district health clinics./PN
