ILOILO – The municipality of Pototan emerged as champion in this year’s search for the most Persons with Disabilities (PWD)-friendly local government unit (LGU) in Iloilo Province, as the provincial government marked the 47th National Disability Rights Week with a recognition ceremony held on July 28 at the capitol grounds.

The contest, spearheaded by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), aimed to promote and reward LGUs that have shown outstanding initiatives in improving the lives of PWDs through inclusive programs and accessible services.

“To the seven municipalities that made it to the finals, I commend your dedication and hard work. And to all the municipalities that participated in this year’s search, congratulations and recognition to every one of you for your efforts,” said Social Welfare Officer IV and PWD officer designate Ann Rapunzel Ganzon.

She added, “This program aligns with the governor’s social justice agenda and our commitment to strengthening and delivering programs for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Our goal is to enhance social services for marginalized sectors and ensure access to essential services. We have come a long way, and I believe we are moving in the right direction.”

The awarding recognized the following municipalities:

* Pototan – champion (P50,000 cash prize)

* New Lucena – first runner-up (P30,000)

* Leganes – second runner-up (P20,000)

Four other municipalities were named finalists for their commendable efforts: Leon, Concepcion, Sara, and Barotac Viejo.

The awarding ceremony was attended by key provincial officials including Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Acting PSWDO head Rani Melvi Cuarte, and PSWDO PWD focal person Ma. Christine Roa.

Cuarte underscored the importance of mainstreaming disability rights in governance and tailoring educational and support programs for PWDs.

“This event serves as a crucial reminder of our shared obligation to promote, protect, and fulfill the rights of persons with disabilities. It is more than a celebration; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to building a society where inclusion is a foundational principle rather than a privilege,” she said.

Beyond the awards, the provincial government continues to provide scholarships and other empowerment programs for PWDs across Iloilo, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive and equitable development./PN
