ILOILO City – In an affirmation of its public safety and governance efforts, Iloilo City was named the Philippines’ top Highly Urbanized City (HUC) and home to the country’s best city police office during the 124th Police Service Anniversary of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The city bested fellow HUC finalists Zamboanga and Pasig, while the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) outshone its counterparts from Butuan and Davao to clinch the PNP’s top unit award for city police offices nationwide.
Mayor Raisa Treñas attributed the double victory to the seamless collaboration between the city government and its police force.
“One of the reasons for this recognition is the strong and effective partnership between the City Government and the ICPO,” she said. “We do all this because we never want our city to be known again as a haven for illegal drugs. Iloilo City is now a model of good governance, trust, and public service.”
Since 2019, the city has funneled over P600 million to support local law enforcement — funding fuel, vehicle maintenance, office supplies, training, and police allowances. Four new police stations were activated in 2024 alone:
* Police Station 7 in Tanza, City Proper
* Police Station 8 in Bo. Obrero, Lapuz
* Police Station 9 in MV Hechanova, Jaro
* Police Station 10 in Gaisano ICC Complex, San Rafael, Mandurriao
Upgrades to Police Stations 2, 3, 4, and 6 were also implemented with P1.55 million allocated for IT equipment, office furnishings, air-conditioning units, and decibel meters.
In 2025, the city is eyeing an additional P14.8 million for 80 assault rifles, 250 radio battery packs, three patrol Hilux units, and a new SWAT van—measures aimed at boosting rapid response and crime deterrence.
Motivational initiatives such as the “Lechon for Good Performer of the Month” program and team-building activities have also strengthened morale and professionalism within the ICPO.
“This recognition is proof of our dedication and the results of years of consistent effort,” Treñas said. “I share this success with every Ilonggo who dreams of a more peaceful, trustworthy, and progressive Iloilo City.”
The twin awards position Iloilo City as a national benchmark for effective urban governance and law enforcement, underscoring its transformation from a city once plagued by drug problems into a symbol of security and public service excellence./PN
