NEW DELHI, India — The Philippines is set to formalize a strategic partnership with India aimed at strengthening cooperation in defense, trade, health, tourism, and other key sectors, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced at the start of his five-day state visit to the South Asian nation.
Speaking before the Filipino community at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi, Marcos said the upgraded partnership represents a significant milestone in bilateral relations and reflects both countries’ commitment to deeper engagement.
“This means that from now on, our cooperation will intensify further and become even more impactful in many, many areas that we had not explored with India before, such as defense, trade and investment, health, tourism, and other areas,” the President said.
The formal declaration is expected during Marcos’ scheduled bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which also coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Marcos emphasized India’s growing role in the Indo-Pacific and its importance as an economic partner, citing new opportunities for collaboration in defense, connectivity, and people-to-people ties.
He also welcomed the potential for improved connectivity through direct flights and noted the visa-free entry of Indian tourists to the Philippines as a catalyst for increased tourism and cultural exchange.
In a further sign of deepening ties, Marcos announced that the two countries are set to sign a Social Security Agreement, which will benefit overseas Filipino workers and strengthen labor cooperation between the Philippines and India.
