NEGROS Occidental – The continuous heavy rains triggered flooding and a minor landslide in southern Negros Occidental, displacing at least 29 families on Tuesday, August 26, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) confirmed.
PDRRMO head Irene Bel Ploteña said four families composed of 13 individuals were evacuated in Barangay Campisang, Sipalay City after a portion of the Campisang River bank eroded on Tuesday.
No injuries were reported, however the Sipalay City Government continued to assess the stability of the area to ensure residents’ safety.
A rockslide was also reported in the city’s Sitio Matlag, Barangay 4. The city government issued a public advisory yesterday, August 27, that the road in Sitio Matlag was passable only to light vehicles.
In the municipality of Ilog, 25 families composed of 67 individuals were placed under pre-emptive evacuation due to flooding.
Also, several parts of Kabankalan City, including the district engineering office of the Department of Public Works and Highways, were inundated following heavy rains since Tuesday night. Reports said some residents were forced to evacuate.
Meanwhile, the PDRRMO said that classes in the southern part of the province were suspended yesterday as a precautionary measure due to persistent heavy rains and the threat of flooding.
Face-to-face classes for all levels in both public and private schools were suspended in the following areas: Binalbagan, Candoni, Cauayan, Himamaylan City, Hinigaran, Hinoba-an, Ilog, Isabela, Kabankalan City, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, and Sipalay City./PN
