BACOLOD City – The Police Regional Office – Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) is beefing up its campaign against illegal firearms.
Police Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR director, said they are committed to ensuring a safer, more peaceful region by curbing the proliferation of loose firearms.
“We are taking decisive and proactive measures to eliminate illegal firearms from our communities, which are often the root of violence and lawlessness. The people of Negros deserve to live without fear,” he said.
The latest operation against illegal firearms was carried out on Monday, August 25, in Purok Daisy, Barangay Tampalon, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental through the strength of a search warrant for violating Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act).
Officers of the Kabankalan City Police Station arrested alias “Alfred”, 38, a resident of the said barangay, and confiscated a Smith & Wesson caliber .357 revolver, with serial number 130184, loaded with three live rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was detained at the Kabankalan City Police Station for proper disposition.
From January 1 to July 31 this year, the Negros Occidental police seized a total of 179 firearms and arrested 155 persons in 161 operations.
Police stations across the province also recorded 209 surrendered, deposited, and abandoned firearms.
“The crackdown sends a strong message to individuals involved in the illegal possession, manufacture, or trafficking of firearms that PRO-NIR remains relentless in its mandate to uphold the rule of law,” Ibay said. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency)/PN
