BACOLOD City – The city government here will grant an additional allowance to the 664 new scholars under the Public Employment Services Office (PESO).
PESO head Jovelyn Canoy confirmed this on Monday, August 25, saying Mayor Greg Gasataya has pledged to provide further financial support to the scholars.
“Ginapapangitaan na ni Mayor kung diin ang possible, either may assistance gid sila nga makuha direct sa ila or dugangan gid ang financial aid nga pwede mahatag sa ila,” Canoy said.
During the Scholars’ Assembly and Orientation held last week at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC), Gasataya assured the students that the additional subsidy will be released within the first semester.
Each grantee currently receives a subsidy of P10,000 to P12,000 per semester to help cover living and academic expenses, part of the city government’s continuing commitment to education.
“The support is not just for tuition; the greatest need of most students is how to survive day-to-day expenses,” Gasataya said, stressing that education is a right and not a privilege.
“Education is the right of every Filipino. Education is your right; it is not a privilege, although sometimes we still need finances to graduate. We are here, striving to improve the services and assistance that the government provides. Do not waste the opportunity given to you,” he added, encouraging scholars to maximize the program.
Canoy also reminded the grantees of their responsibility to participate in community service under City Ordinance No. 386, Article XI, Section 1.
“Under the ordinance, our city scholars are required to volunteer in community activities. PESO Bacolod is very pleased that our scholars are actively involved in the initiatives of our local government,” she said.
Canoy added: “Joining community service helps you develop your abilities, communication, and leadership skills — the very qualities employers look for. This is an important part of your preparation for future job hunting.”
