BACOLOD City — In the wake of a devastating fire that gutted 256 households in Barangay 27, the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) has passed a resolution urging the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to implement stricter safety and preventive measures, particularly in high-risk “red zone” areas.
The BFP has previously identified around 195 red zones—areas considered fire-prone due to difficult access and a history of fire incidents. Councilor Em Ang, author of the resolution, emphasized that the recent fire in Barangay 27, which destroyed property and displaced 984 residents, underscores the urgent need to strengthen fire safety protocols.
“The safety of all citizens, especially those in high-risk areas, must be prioritized to prevent future tragedies,” Ang said. “The city recognizes the vital role of the BFP in ensuring public safety through effective prevention, inspection, and emergency response. Enhancing fire safety protocols and enforcement measures is necessary to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.”
The resolution calls on the BFP to: conduct comprehensive safety inspections and assessments of fire-prone areas, particularly densely populated red zones like Barangay 27; strictly enforce fire safety protocols, including compliance with building codes, proper fire exits, and electrical safety standards; increase community education campaigns on fire prevention and safety awareness; implement effective early warning and emergency response systems; and coordinate with local barangay officials and other relevant agencies to develop and execute proactive fire prevention plans.
Through the resolution, the Bacolod SP seeks to ensure that both government authorities and communities work together to prevent future fire-related tragedies in the city./PN
