ILOILO – Three Ilonggo generals now holding top posts in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) were honored by the Iloilo provincial government for their exemplary service and dedication to national defense and peacekeeping.
During the flag-raising ceremony at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol on October 13, Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. led the tribute to the military officers whose leadership has brought pride not only to Iloilo but also to the country’s defense establishment.
“These men exemplify the discipline, patriotism, and integrity that continue to strengthen our communities and safeguard our nation,” Defensor said. “Their dedication and service to our nation significantly enhance peace and security in our communities.”
The honorees were Lieutenant General Antonio Gustilo Nafarrete, the 67th Commanding General of the Philippine Army and former Western Mindanao Command chief; Lieutenant General Luis Rex Deza Bergante, commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command; and Lieutenant General Jimmy Decalit Larida, vice chief of staff of the AFP.
Nafarrete, born in Calinog, Iloilo, on February 22, 1969, is a 1990 graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).
Bergante, a native of Jaro, Iloilo, also a PMA Class of 1990 alumnus, has been heading critical operations in Mindanao since June 2024.
Meanwhile, Larida, from Dueñas, Iloilo, graduated cum laude from PMA in 1991 and assumed the AFP’s second-highest post in January 2025.
Each officer received a Plaque of Commendation and a Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution of Recognition for their achievements and unwavering commitment to public service.
The awarding was witnessed by Vice Gov. Nathalie Ann Debuque, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, and Provncial Board members Rolando Distura, Rica Jane Garin, Jo Ann Germinanda, and June Mondejar.
Also in attendance were Brigadier General Michael Gavilan Samson of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, Colonel Nhel Richard Patricio of the 301st Infantry Brigade, Police Brigadier General Josefino Ligan of the Police Regional Office 6, Police Colonel Bayani Razalan of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, and Provincial Director Carmelo Orbista of the Department of Interior and Local Government.
Beyond the recognition, the ceremony underscored the deep synergy between the military and the local government in maintaining peace and promoting development across Iloilo./PN
