NEGROS Occidental — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the town of Candoni in Negros Occidental early Monday, November 3, 2025, just as preparations were underway for the approaching tropical cyclone Tino.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tremor occurred at 3:06 a.m., with its epicenter located 18 kilometers southeast of Candoni at a depth of 61 kilometers. PHIVOLCS initially reported the quake as magnitude 5.6 but later downgraded it to 5.5.
The quake was strongly felt in Candoni, Negros Occidental, and in nearby Dumaguete City and Sibulan in Negros Oriental, which registered Intensity IV. Intensity III was recorded in Jordan, Guimaras, as well as in Bago City, Sipalay City, and La Carlota City in Negros Occidental.
Other areas that felt minor tremors included Malinao, Aklan; Culasi, San Jose, Sebaste, and Valderrama in Antique; Nueva Valencia in Guimaras; Argao and Cebu City in Cebu; Dipolog City, Liloy, Sindangan, and Siocon in Zamboanga del Norte; and Dumingag in Zamboanga del Sur. Intensity I was reported in parts of Capiz, Antique, Guimaras, Bacolod City, Bohol, and Cebu.
PHIVOLCS reported that no damage is expected, although aftershocks remain possible. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
As a precautionary measure against Typhoon Tino, local officials suspended classes at all levels, both public and private, and limited work in municipal offices to essential services, including the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Municipal Health Office, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Residents were advised to stay alert, remain indoors unless necessary, and follow official announcements from the local government and relevant agencies./PN
