ILOILO City – Nine fishermen from Palawan were plucked from danger in a high-risk maritime rescue off Anini-y, Antique, after their vessel went into distress amid rough sea conditions, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.
Commander Richard Gura, spokesperson of the Coast Guard District Western Visayas, said they received a distress alert past 7 a.m. on December 5 from the Coast Guard District Palawan’s Communications Center involving FBCA Kim Syvil, located around 19 nautical miles southwest of Nogas Island.
BRP Kalangaman was immediately dispatched despite challenging sea conditions.
“First of all, I would like to commend the brave and dedicated crew of BRP Kalangaman, whose swift action and professionalism led to the successful rescue of nine fishermen in distress earlier today,” Gura said. “Their actions reflect the highest standards of service expected from the Philippine Coast Guard and demonstrate our unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea.”
All nine fishermen were safely recovered.
“Through their timely response, all nine fishermen were safely recovered and are now receiving proper care and assistance. To the rescued fishermen — we are thankful that you are safe. Your safety is our top priority, and we will remain ready 24/7 to respond to any call for help within our area of responsibility,” Gura said.
He underscored the critical role of cooperation between fisherfolk and the Coast Guard.
“This successful operation highlights the importance of cooperation between the maritime community and the Coast Guard. We encourage all fisherfolk and vessel operators to observe safety protocols, regularly check weather updates, and comply with advisories issued by the PCG,” he said.
The rescued fishermen, all from Puerto Princesa City, were identified as: boat captain Jerald Maloyloy-on, 42; Reynan Torremocha, 30; Jobert A. Maloyloy-on, 36; Ronel G. Alpas, 38; Albert A. Dandal, 46; Fedel R. Dini-ay, 28; Eric P. Germata, 51; Richard Morata, 31; and Robert Ocampo, 60.
