MANILA — The University of Santo Tomas stamped its authority on UAAP women’s basketball once more, overpowering National University, 79-64, in a decisive Game 3 on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena to reclaim the Season 88 championship and close the finals with a statement performance built on poise, depth, and experience.
Negrense guard Kent Jane Pastrana delivered a fitting farewell in her final outing for the Growling Tigresses, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and five steals to anchor UST’s title run and earn Finals Most Valuable Player honors as the Tigresses wrapped up the best-of-three series, 2-1.
“Sobrang happy lang kami kasi ‘yung sakripisyo namin, ilang years na magkakasama kami ng UST, ito na ‘yung bunga. Nao-overwhelm ako kasi wala naman sa goal ko na makuha ‘yung Finals MVP, goal ko lang makuha ang championship,” said Pastrana.
Isioma Onianwa added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Eka Soriano, CJ Maglupay, and Karylle Sierba chipped in 10 points each as UST showcased a balanced attack in the title clincher.
After falling behind early, 15-23, in the opening quarter, the Growling Tigresses regrouped and seized control before halftime, leaning on Pastrana and Onianwa to turn the tide and take a 37-30 lead at the break.
UST then blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring NU, 34-23, to stretch the margin to 71-53. The Lady Bulldogs attempted a late rally in the fourth, but timely baskets from Onianwa ensured there would be no comeback.
“Syempre, sa dalawang nasa harapan ninyo, Kent and Eka are my cornerstones. Without them, siguro mahihirapan kami to get another championship,” said Growling Tigresses head coach Haydee Ong.
“We played for each other, we played with heart and pride together. Down in the second quarter, hindi bumigay ang mga bata,” she added.
Kristine Cayabyab led National University with 21 points, while Aloha Betanio and Marga Villanueva finished with 11 and 10, respectively, in the Lady Bulldogs’ losing effort./PN
