BACOLOD City — Mayor Greg Gasataya has ordered an immediate investigation into reports of allegedly spoiled food served during the city government’s annual Employees’ Day celebration on December 19, describing the incident as “disappointing and unacceptable.”
In a public statement, Gasataya said he directed all department and office heads to submit detailed written reports based on feedback from their respective personnel and staff.
He also confirmed that a meeting with officers of the Bacolod City Government Employees Union (BCGEU), which served as the official organizer of the event, has been scheduled to urgently address the issue.
“It is common sense that due diligence and the highest standards of care must be observed in the preparation and handling of food provided to our employees, as they deserve nothing less,” the mayor said, stressing that the health and safety of government workers should never be compromised by negligence or mismanagement.
Employees’ Day is among the most anticipated annual events for city government workers. In recognition of its importance, the city government extended full support to the BCGEU for this year’s celebration.
A total of P3.2 million was provided by the city through a cash advance facilitated by BCGEU President Erry Lagtapon to cover all event-related expenses, including meals for an estimated 6,650 attendees.
However, Gasataya said numerous employees, including department and office heads, raised concerns about the quality of the food served, with some alleging that it was already spoiled. He described the reports as “deeply troubling” and said they warrant a thorough and immediate inquiry.
“We will get to the bottom of this. This shall never happen again. Our workers deserve better,” the mayor said.
