CAPIZ — The New Year celebration across the province of Capiz was generally peaceful, according to the Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO), citing manageable peace and order conditions during the holiday festivities.
Police Col. Albert D. Tapulao, provincial director of the CPPO, said the overall security situation reflected effective monitoring and enforcement by law enforcement authorities throughout the province.
Tapulao noted that this year’s celebrations were marked by various community activities that fostered unity and joy among residents, contributing to the generally safe atmosphere.
However, the festivities were marred by a tragic incident in Jamindan, where a four-year-old girl was killed after being struck in the head by a stray bullet from an accidental firearm discharge.
Police said the child’s grandfather, who was allegedly responsible for the accidental firing, has been arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
In light of the incident, the CPPO underscored the importance of responsible firearm handling, especially during festive occasions when the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnics increases.
The CPPO also reported intensified operations against illegal fireworks, resulting in the seizure of large quantities of prohibited firecrackers. Several batches have already been forwarded to the Police Regional Office 6 for proper disposal.
Authorities said the crackdown forms part of broader efforts to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during holiday celebrations.
