ILOILO — Public school classes across Western Visayas resumed on Monday, January 5, officially ending the holiday break and signalling a packed academic calendar that includes major regional competitions and programs aimed at strengthening basic education skills, the Department of Education (DepEd) in the region said.
Hernani Escullar Jr., regional information officer of DepEd Western Visayas, said students returned to school as scheduled, marking the continuation of School Year 2025–2026 after the year-end break that began on December 20, 2025.
The break was intended to allow learners time to rest and reconnect with their families before resuming academic work.
Beyond the resumption of classes, Escullar said schools and learners can expect an active year ahead, highlighted by major academic and athletic events designed to promote holistic student development.
Among the key activities is the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet scheduled in March, which will gather top student-athletes from across the region.
Escullar said the Schools Division Office of Passi City, which will host the event, has already begun preparations to ensure its successful staging.
Also lined up this year are the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) and the Regional Festival of Talents, which provide platforms for students to showcase skills in journalism, academics, and the arts.
Escullar added that Western Visayas is also eyeing the possible hosting of the National Festival of Talents, an event that would bring student achievers from different parts of the country to the region.
In terms of academic priorities, Escullar said the regional office, following the directive of Officer-in-Charge Regional Director Cristito Eco, will focus on improving learners’ literacy and numeracy skills, which he described as essential foundations for long-term academic success./PN
