ILOILO — A closed circuit television (CCTV)-recorded lane breach has emerged as a key factor in a deadly late-night road accident in Guimbal town, where a 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed after colliding head-on with a multicab, police said.
The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on December 26, 2025 along a stretch of road in Barangay Baras, as the rider was heading home from Miag-ao, a route he regularly used.
Guimbal police chief Police Captain Melvin Mercado said CCTV footage reviewed by investigators showed the motorcycle crossing into the opposite lane moments before impact.
“The motorcycle crossed into the opposite lane, where it struck the multicab traveling in the other direction,” Mercado said, describing the sequence captured on video.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash that triggered panic among nearby residents.
First responders rushed the motorcyclist to a hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Police initially detained the multicab driver for questioning but later released him after discussions with the victim’s family.
Mercado said the family decided not to file charges after viewing the CCTV footage.
“The family saw the incident through the CCTV footage, which clarified the situation. They expressed their understanding and declined to file any legal charges against the multicab driver,” he said.
Investigators also noted safety lapses that likely worsened the outcome.
Witnesses indicated the rider appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and police confirmed he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The fatality has renewed calls from residents and authorities for stricter compliance with road safety rules, particularly helmet use and sober riding.
