MANILA — The Premier Volleyball League has drawn a firm line against team consolidation, shutting down speculation of a possible merger between the Petro Gazz Angels and the Nxled Chameleons and making clear that any attempt to do so would force one franchise to fold.
PVL chairman Tony Boy Liao said league rules categorically prohibit mergers, stressing that the only way two teams could “combine” would be for one to cease operations altogether.
“As per the merger of PetroGazz and Nxled, (PVL President) Ricky Palou said that it won’t be allowed and one team should remain if they will plan to merge,” Liao said in a Viber message to Panay News.
Liao underscored that disbandment carries major roster consequences, as all players from a dissolved team would automatically be declared unrestricted free agents.
“The players of the team that will disband should be free agents and can be picked by any team,” he explained.
He pointed to the recent case of the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, whose players entered free agency after the club folded.
“As what’s been happening now with the players from Chery Tiggo whose contracts had expired,” Liao said.
The clarification comes as teams prepare for the next PVL season amid heightened speculation over roster shakeups and franchise movements, with the league leadership emphasizing stability, competitive balance, and strict adherence to existing rules./PN
