MANILA – The College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Lady Blazers stamped their dominance in NCAA Season 101 women’s volleyball with a commanding straight-sets victory over the Lyceum of the Philippines University Lady Pirates, 25-18, 25-15, 25-16, stretching their winning streak to four and firming up their hold in Group A on Wednesday at the San Andres Sports Complex.
With the emphatic win, the Taft-based squad improved to 5-1, sending a strong message to the rest of the field as the elimination round heats up.
Shahanna Lleses spearheaded Benilde’s balanced assault with 12 points and seven receptions, leading a methodical offensive display that left Lyceum scrambling for answers. She drew ample support from Clydel Catarig and Zam Nolasco, who chipped in 10 and eight points, respectively.
Shahanna’s twin sister, Shekaina Lleses, contributed across the floor with six points and nine digs, as the Lady Blazers ended Lyceum’s three-game winning run and dropped the Lady Pirates to 3-4 in Group B.
Lyceum showed brief resistance in the third set, forcing a 6-all deadlock, but Benilde quickly reasserted control through a decisive service run and steady net defense. Rookie Camila Bartolome sparked a crucial mid-set separation with timely conversions, allowing the Lady Blazers to pull away for good and close out the match in convincing fashion.
Veteran Johna Dolorito paced the Lady Pirates with 11 points, seven excellent digs, and nine excellent receptions, while Ashley Muchillas added six markers in the losing effort.
In the other match, the San Beda University Lady Red Spikers sustained their strong campaign under head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes, overcoming the Mapúa University Lady Cardinals in four tight sets, 26-28, 26-24, 27-25, 25-20.
Janelle Bachar delivered a standout performance with 23 points built on 18 attacks, four service aces, and a block, alongside 14 excellent digs to earn Player of the Game honors.
As the tournament progresses, Benilde’s cohesion and depth continue to set the pace in Group A, while San Beda signals its own serious intentions in the title chase./PN
