BACOLOD City — More than 1,000 households in Purok Arao II at the Arao Relocation Site in Barangay Vista Alegre are now benefiting from reliable street lighting after years of living in darkness, marking a significant improvement in safety, security, and overall quality of life in the community.
The city government, led by Mayor Greg Gasataya, implemented the streetlight installation project, culminating in a simple ceremonial switch-on on Thursday night, February 12, at the relocation site.
Gasataya earlier visited the area and personally saw the residents’ situation, prompting him to immediately coordinate with the City Engineer’s Office (CEO) and Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) to address the long-standing concern.
Within three days, 62 new streetlights were installed and the electricity supply in the area was reinforced.
The lighting project is expected to bring multiple benefits to families in the relocation site. A well-lit environment enhances community safety at night, reduces fear, and improves security for both children and parents, the mayor said.
He added that the project also creates better conditions for studying and livelihood activities, as children can study in brighter surroundings and families can feel more secure in their homes.
For relocated residents, the initiative also symbolizes the restoration of dignity and hope.
Gasataya emphasized that relocation sites should not only provide shelter but must also evolve into livable, vibrant, and dignified communities where families can thrive.
“In Bacolod, public service is not just about projects, but about compassion and responding to the real conditions of our people,” the mayor said.
With the installation of the streetlights, the Arao community now enjoys the illumination it has long awaited — bringing improved safety, renewed hope, and a brighter future for its residents, the mayor added./PN
