ILOILO City — A local advocacy coalition is calling on residents to participate in a march on Feb. 25 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, describing the activity as a protest against corruption and political misconduct.
The group, Pamatan-on Kontra Korapsyon, appealed to the public to turn out in large numbers, saying the demonstration is intended to express opposition to alleged irregularities in government spending, the persistence of political dynasties, and what it described as poorly executed infrastructure projects.
In a public statement, convenor Matt Gonzaga took issue with the classification of the EDSA anniversary as a “special working holiday” under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., arguing that the move diminishes the historical significance of the 1986 uprising.
The coalition also called for accountability from national leaders, including Vice President Sara Duterte, particularly in connection with questions raised over confidential funds and other governance concerns.
Organizers said participants will gather at 12:30 p.m. at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The march is set to begin at 2:30 p.m., passing St. Clement’s Church before concluding at Jaro Plaza.
This year’s observance marks four decades since the peaceful uprising along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in 1986 led to the removal of then-president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the restoration of democratic institutions in the Philippines.
