ILOILO City – Major roads in the City Proper will be fully closed to traffic starting at 7:30 p.m. of February 19 until February 20 as Iloilo City rolls out tight traffic control measures for the Chinese New Year parade, authorities announced, warning motorists to brace for significant disruptions.
The Iloilo City Traffic and Transportation Management Office (ICTTMO) said the closures are necessary to secure parade routes and protect thousands of participants and spectators expected to gather for the annual celebration highlighting the city’s vibrant Chinese-Filipino heritage.
ICTTMO head Uldarico Garbanzos stressed that public safety remains the top priority.
“We will implement full road closures in selected streets to ensure the safety of parade participants and spectators,” Garbanzos said.
Traffic personnel will be stationed in strategic areas to assist motorists and regulate vehicle flow during the two-day event.
Among the roads that will be temporarily closed are Fermin Caram Avenue (also known as Iznart Street), a portion of J.M. Basa Street from corner Arroyo Street to Ortiz Street, as well as portion of Muelle Loney Street from Arroyo Street to Hervas Street.
Garbanzos urged drivers to map out their travel plans ahead of time and avoid the affected areas.
All trucks and trailers are prohibited from using these streets.
“We are asking for the public’s cooperation to plan their trips ahead and take alternative routes while the celebration is ongoing,” said Garbanzos.
The parade is part of Iloilo City’s annual Chinese New Year festivities, which underscore the city’s long-standing cultural and economic ties with the Chinese community./PN
