MIAMI — Alexandra Eala delivered another commanding performance on the big stage, sweeping past Poland’s Magda Linette, 6-3, 7-6(2), to storm into the Round of 16 of the Miami Open on Saturday night (Sunday in the Philippines) in Miami, Florida.
The 20-year-old Filipina standout, who traces her roots to Victorias City, Negros Occidental, showcased composure, precision, and maturity beyond her years as she outplayed the experienced Linette in key moments to secure a breakthrough run in the WTA 1000 tournament.
Eala imposed her rhythm early, dictating the pace with controlled aggression before fending off a late challenge in the second set, where Linette forced a tiebreak. Unfazed, Eala dominated the breaker, 7-2, to seal the straight-sets victory.
The world No. 29 backed up her win with solid numbers, outscoring Linette 71-59 and finishing with a 13-9 edge in games won. She was particularly effective on second serves, winning 86 percent of points compared to Linette’s 58 percent.
Eala also capitalized on her opportunities, converting two of five break points while limiting Linette to just one break in two chances.
Her all-around efficiency was evident in the rallies and returns, where she tallied 24 receiving points against Linette’s 17, highlighted by a seven-point run that helped swing momentum in her favor.
“Patience was very important in my game today,” Eala said after the match. “Magda is such a tough opponent and she really makes you work for every point.”
“I’ve always wanted to be aggressive. Maybe it’s only come out well in the past year, but it’s really part of my game,” she added. “I have an amazing team who have helped fine-tune my game and take it to the next level.”
With the victory, Eala advances to the Round of 16 where she will face world No. 13 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, marking another major test in her impressive Miami campaign./PN
